Workplace safety expo set March 8-9

3:09 p.m., March 7, 2005--The annual Delmarva Safety Seminar and Exposition to explore safety and occupational health issues in the workplace will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, March 8 and 9, at the Clarion in Ocean City, Md.

“When workplace deaths due to injury reach 5,000 annually and exceed $146 billion a year for medical payments and lost work, it’s time to consider strategies to slow down the trend,” Ron Jester, UD Extension safety specialist, said. “Workplace injuries and illnesses can be prevented, and that’s what we will focus on in the training sessions.”

Sponsored by the Delmarva Safety Association (DSA) in cooperation with Cooperative Extension at the universities of Delaware and Maryland, this year’s event will start off with a full-day of intensive-training workshops aimed at managers, supervisors and safety professionals. Sessions will run from 8 a.m.-noon and from 1-6 p.m.

Topics will be “First Aid Essentials and CPR Certifications”; “Workers Compensation”; “Drugs in the Workplace”; “Confined Space Entry”; “Understanding and Supervising Hispanic Workers”; “Personal Protective Equipment”; and “Traffic Safety.”

Because of increasing interest in quality safety and health educational programs, activities for March 9 include includes six workshops, several demonstrations, and a safety equipment exposition, with more than 50 exhibitors. In addition, there will be safety equipment company exhibits, federal and Maryland OSHA consultation booths and health-monitoring displays.

Workshops on Wednesday, which run from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m., will include “Reducing Injuries in the Hispanic Workforce”; “Wellness in the Workplace”; “Electrical Safety”; Managing Safety”; “Ergonomics”; “Controlling Hazardous Energy”; “Construction Zone Safety”; and “Mold in the Workplace.”

An anniversary gift will be offered by DSA sponsors to the first 400 registrants, and vacation packages will be given to lucky registrants at the conclusion of the program.

For information on cost and other conference details or to register, visit the DSA website at [www.delmarvasafety.org], call (302) 856-7303 or e-mail [rcjester@udel.edu].
