3 Delaware Symphony concerts set for UD

3:42 p.m., July 21, 2005--As it celebrates its 100th anniversary, the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro David Amado, is launching the Discover Delaware Series with Friday evening performances at 8 p.m., Oct. 21, Feb. 3 and April 21 in UD’s Mitchell Hall and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m., Oct. 23, Feb. 5 and April 23 at Milford High School.

The series includes:

  • Oct. 21 and 23--violinist Rachel Lee in a program featuring works by Sibelius, including Finlandia and Violin Concerto & Symphony No. 5 in Eb Major;
  • Feb. 3 and 5--pianist Roman Rabinovich, the orchestra’s 2005 Young Soloist Winner, in a program including Integrales by Varese, Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major by Beethoven and Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov; and
  • April 21 and 23--violinist Xiang Gao, associate professor of music at UD, in a program that includes Passacaglia by Webern, Violin Concerto in E Minor by Mendelssohn and Symphony No. 4 in E Minor by Brahms.

The cost for series tickets is $81, available now, and includes preconcert conversation with Maestro Amado one hour before the concert. Tickets for individual performances are $30 each and go on sale Monday, Aug. 1. Student tickets for those 18 and under are $10, and student rush tickets are $10 with ID, 30 minutes before the performance.

2005 DSO inaugural concerts

The Delaware Symphony Orchestra will celebrate its 100th anniversary with performances, featuring Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Olga Kern, at 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington.

The program will feature Kern in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and will include Tchaikovsky’s Polonaise from Eugene Onegin and Symphony No. 5 in E Minor.

In 2001, Kern was the first woman to receive the Van Cliburn Gold Medal in more than 30 years. She has performed with the Boston Pops and at the Kennedy Center and has played with orchestras throughout the United States.

There will be a preperformance conversation with UD professor and orchestra conductor, Brian Stone. To celebrate DSO’s 100th anniversary, there will be cake, special surprises for the audience, a CD signing and musician and guest artist meet-and-greets with coffee and sweet treats during the evening.
