October is Cyber Security Awareness Month IT-Network and System Services has organized several programs geared towards student users during October to kick off their No Excuses campaign against illegal downloading of copyright materials. Resident Computing Consultants (RCCs) and full-time IT staff will be manning two kiosks from 11 a.m.2 p.m., Oct. 6 and Oct. 12, in the Trabant University Center to help promote Cyber Security Awareness Month. On Thursday, Oct. 6, the IT campaign will be focusing on computer security practices that students should follow to keep their computer secure from hackers and intrusions, including viruses, spyware and identity theft. The campaign on Wednesday, Oct. 12, will address copyright issues and the consequences at UD of illegal downloading, as well as legal options students have for obtaining music and movies online. Flashlight key chains, posters and information handouts will be available at the kiosks for every University computer user. Students also will have an opportunity to enter a raffle for several prizes, including an Apple iPod. In addition to Cyber Security Awareness Month, IT-Network and System Services works year around on copyright infringement, virus protection and general web abuse issues on the campus. UDs Code of the Web has made students aware of the consequences of negligent Internet use. The University also has acquired a license for McFee antivirus software so that all students and employees can use the program free of charge. Members of the computer community are invited to visit the National Cyber Security Alliance web site at [www.staysafeonline.info], which includes information to help students, faculty, staff and home users to protect their computers against viruses, worms, spyware, hacker attacks and identity theft. The alliance, started to promote cyber security and safe online behavior, is a public-private partnership whose members include AOL Time Warner and the Federal Trade Commission. UD web users are encouraged to visit [www.udel.edu/security] to learn more about the Universitys computer policies. Article by Kim Sharrah, AS 06 To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
