Cultural perspectives lecture series set

4:36 p.m., Aug. 10, 2005--UD’s Area Studies Program--consisting of African, East Asian, Continental European and Latin American Studies--is offering a free public lecture series for the fall. “Urban and Rural Cultures in Perspective” features talks by UD faculty about their research on urban and rural issues throughout the world.

Each lecture runs from 12:30-1:20 p.m., Thursdays, in 103 Sharp Lab. The public is welcome to attend.

  • Sept. 1--“The Evolution of Paradise: Urbanism and the Garden in Ancient Greece and Rome” by Annette Giesecke, associate professor of foreign languages and literatures;
  • Sept. 8--“Tenochitlan: Revisiting a Splendorous City” by Gladys Ilarregui, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures;
  • Sept. 15--“Medieval Venice and Paris in Comparative Perspective” by Daniel Callahan, professor of history;
  • Sept. 22--“Masking for Money: New Old Art, Performance and Commoditization in a West African City” by Peter Weil, associate professor of anthropology;
  • Sept. 29--"When Urban Malays Travel to Island Resorts: Recreational Tourism and the Creation of a Malay Muslim Middle Class" by Patricia Sloane-White, adjunct professor of anthropology;
  • Oct. 6--“Island Landscapes: Tourism and the Rural Experience in the Caribbean” by Carla Guerrón-Montero, assistant professor of anthropology;
  • Oct.13--"African Contributions to the Cultures of the New World” by Wunyabari Maloba, associate professor of history;
  • Oct. 20--“Urban/Rural Issues in the Evolution of Classical Chinese Philosophy” by Alan Fox, associate professor of philosophy;
  • Oct. 27--“Big Architecture: Placing Optimism About the Future Africa” by Ikem Okoye, assistant professor of art history;
  • Nov. 3--“Planning the Modern City: London and Paris in the 19th Century” by Owen White, assistant professor of history;
  • Nov. 10-- “Politics of Nostalgia in Havana, Cuba” by Persephone Braham, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures; and
  • Nov. 17--“In Search of a Lost Utopia: The Image of ‘Holy’ Fools in Chinese Popular Culture” by Jianguo Chen, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures.

The lecture series is being offered in conjunction with Area Studies Programs course ARSC 367-010, “Urban and Rural Cultures in Perspective,” and can be taken for one pass-or-fail credit.
