Heart Walk captains sought for 9/11 walk

1:17 p.m., May 12, 2005--The University of Delaware once again will be participate in the American Heart Walk to be held this year on Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Riverfront in Wilmington.

Coordinators Marianne Carter, director of UD’s Employee Wellness Center, and Richie Holland, manager of human resources, are looking for volunteers willing to serve as Heart Walk captains. These individuals assist with recruiting employees, students, retirees, alumni and friends to join the UD team and raise funds.

For the past several years, UD has ranked in the top 10 businesses for total amount of money raised. More than 125 UD students, staff, alumni and friends participated in the 2004 American Heart Walk, as UD turned in its best performance ever, raising more than $14,000 to help the American Heart Association in its fight against heart disease.

"It's great that the University supports this important cause,” Carter said. “Heart disease is this nation's leading killer and funds raised are used for much needed education and research."

CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), cholesterol-lowering drugs, alternatives to open-heart surgery and treatments to reverse stroke damage are but a few of the advances that the American Heart Association has helped make in the fight against heart disease and stroke, according to Carter.

Recent efforts are being directed at educating women about their risk, with the "Go Red for Women" campaign. Heart disease is not just a man' disease--nearly twice as many women die from heart disease as from all forms of cancer.

"I am pleased to be one of the coordinators for the Heart Walk again this year,” Holland said. “I know of so many employees who have been affected by Heart Disease, or who have a friend or relative who has been affected. The Office of Human Resources is proud to once again provide support and coordinating efforts to employees and students interested in joining us for the Heart Walk on Sept. 11.”

Those who are willing to recruit a team of eight to 10 walkers and serve as a Heart Captain are asked to call Carter at (302) 831-1109 or e-mail her at [mcarter@udel.edu]. Captains will be invited to attend a kick-off luncheon in June to review their roles and get additional information.
