Summer Faculty Institute general sessions

3:37 p.m., May 19, 2005--General sessions of UD’s annual Summer Faculty Institute, focusing on teaching with technology, will be held from Monday, June 20, through Thursday, June 23, in 127 Memorial Hall.

The institute’s general sessions are open to the entire University community. Registration is required, and the deadline is Thursday, June 9.

Anyone registering by that date and attending the keynote presentation will receive a complimentary copy of Leonardo’s Laptop: Human Needs and the New Computing Technologies by Ben Shneiderman, the keynote speaker. To register go to [www.udel.edu/present/summer/keynotes.html].

The institute’s general sessions are

  • Monday, June 20--9:30 a.m. breakfast, 10 a.m.-noon, keynote presentation by speaker Ben Shneiderman, founding director of the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory and member of the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies and also the Institute for Systems Research, who will speak on how creative uses of technology in education increase effectiveness of faculty;

  • Tuesday, June 21--10 a.m.-noon, presentations by UD faculty members who have received MyCourses Exemplary Application Contest Awards, using MyCourses through WebCT;

  • Wednesday, June 22--10 a.m.-noon, “Experience IT Yourself: Educational Technologies to Go,” with demonstrations of portable technology for educators, including tablet PCs, Apple iPods, hand-held video devices and personal digital assistance (PDAs), a discussion of the promises and possible pitfalls of these devices and informal presentations of learning solutions for class communication, course management, simulation and animation, multimedia creation and digital storytelling; and

  • Thursday, June 23--9:30 breakfast, 10 a.m.-noon closing plenary presentation, "Staying Motivated: Teaching with Technology," with Anastasia S. Morrone, associate professor of education and executive director of the Center for Teaching Learning at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), who will talk on supporting faculty in using technology and the IUPUI program "Jump Start," supporting faculty as they design and develop online courses with case studies, and a discussion of what works and what doesn’t using a collaborative team-based approach.
