Sorority and city to sponsor 5K fund-raiser

5:21 p.m., May 4, 2005--Alpha Xi Delta is sponsoring its annual 5K run/walk fund-raiser with the Downtown Newark Partnership. Registration is at 8:30 a.m., and the race will begin at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 14, starting at Creek Road near the Ray Street Complex residence halls.

This is the fifth year of the 5K, but the first year it is a town/gown event, according to Jennifer Larson, who is coordinating the event for Alpha Xi Delta.

“We wanted to do something in the community, and this is a good project to join Newark and the University together. It’s always an exciting event for worthwhile causes, with a DJ, a raffle and prizes in different categories,” she said.

“We encourage Newark residents to participate,” Andrew Haines of the Newark Parking Office, who is coordinating the 5K for the city, said. “This is a community event and fun for all ages.”

Half the proceeds will go to Alpha Xi Delta to fund an educational summer camp at Girls Inc. in Wilmington and a scholarship for a UD student with cancer. The other half of the proceeds will go to Newark’s beautification program, and this year will help fund a mural on the CSX railroad bridge crossing Route 2 in Newark.

The cost is $15 for preregistration and $20 for registration the day of the race. Alpha Xi Delta will be at the kiosk in the Trabant University Center to register participants from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday, May 6, and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, May 11, 12 and 13. The Newark Parking Office on the second floor of the Galleria also will register participants.

Delaware National Bank has been a major sponsor of the 5K. In addition, The Pita Pit, 168 East Main St., is donating a percentage of its sales from 4-10 p.m., Monday, May 9, to the 5K walk/run.
