Taste of Newark showcases local cuisine

4:12 p.m., Aug. 19, 2004--The inaugural Taste of Newark event, set for Sunday, Sept. 26, will serve up menu specialties from UD’s Vita Nova, Blue & Gold Club and Catering Services as well as those from some 25 downtown Newark restaurants and several wine and beer suppliers.

Set to take place from noon-3 p.m. on Old College Lawn, (Clayton Hall, in the event of inclement weather) the gastronomic extravaganza will benefit UD’s Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management and the Downtown Newark Partnership (DNP).

The brainchild of Newark Mayor Vance Funk, the event will bring downtown merchants, the University and Newark residents together in a special way. Twenty-five HRIM student volunteers will help staff the event, and UD’s Royal Palm Steel Band will provide live musical entertainment.

According to Funk, the event will showcase Newark’s unique culinary niche while raising money for HRIM scholarships and DNP’s Bridge Painting Project.

“Downtown Newark has a wealth of culinary gems and the offerings of the University give [the town] a particularly unique dining profile,” he said. “The Taste of Newark event is really a tremendous combined effort.”

Tickets are limited to 400 and are going quickly, so advance purchase is recommended. Attendees will receive a Taste of Newark commemorative wineglass, the opportunity to view work by local artists and the chance to enter a raffle for a package featuring gift certificates from every participating restaurant.

Tickets ($25 in advance, $30 at the door) can be purchased at Funk’s law office at 273 East Main St., at participating restaurants or at UD’s Office of Public Relations in The Academy Building, 105 East Main St.
