African journalist, activist speaks at UD Feb. 28

3:42 p.m., Feb. 17, 2005--Govin Reddy, professor of journalism at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, will be the featured speaker in the "News, Citizenship and The Media," lecture from 12:30-2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 28, in the Trabant University Center Theatre.

During the years that Apartheid reigned in South Africa, Reddy, a newspaper publisher, journalist and academic, was jailed, placed under house arrest and exiled for 10 years. He later played a central role in the transformation of the South African media under the government lead by Nelson Mandela.

Reddy has made presentations regarding the role of the media in society in more than 30 countries.

The lecture is cosponsored by the Center for Community Research and Service, School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, College of Human Resources, Education and Public Policy and the Center for International Studies.
