Hip-hop in education talk set Jan. 26

2:18 p.m., Jan. 19, 2005--Shuaib Meacham, a UD assistant professor of education, will explore hip-hop’s role in education in a lecture set for 1-2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 26, in the Class of 1941 Lecture Room of the Morris Library.

Using research collected from his visits to public schools, Meacham will discuss how hip-hop can be a valid educational tool that can reach students unmoved by traditional methods.

A member of the UD faculty since 2001, Meacham earned his bachelor’s degree in creative writing and literature and a master’s degree in reading and literacy from the University of Michigan. He earned a doctorate in education studies from the University of Illinois and recently was one of 36 educators chosen from a field of 200 nominees for a National Academy of Education Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship, a fellowship that supports outstanding early career scholars researching important questions about education.

The free talk, which is sponsored by UD’s Library Diversity Committee, is open to the public.
