Residence halls close Dec. 17

10:07 a.m., Dec. 3, 2004--All residence halls will close for the semester break at 10 p.m., Friday, Dec. 17, and 24-hour quiet hours begin on Reading Day, Thursday, Dec. 9.

To keep the environment conducive to studying for final exams, University officials are asking residents to leave within 24 hours of their last final rather than staying until the official closing date.

Following are some helpful guidelines to remember when leaving for break. Further information, including parking and loading rules, details on mail delivery, computer shutdowns and Winter Session and spring semester move-in guidelines, can be found at [www.udel.edu/reslife/bobc/fallbreak/fallbreak.html].

  • All residents—even those returning for Winter Session—in traditional residence halls must check out with and turn in their room keys and access cards to a Residence Life staff member by closing time before leaving campus. Check-out table hours will be posted in each residence hall. (Christiana Towers, Conover Apartments and The Graduate House will be open to residents during the semester break at no additional charge, and residents do not need to turn in their keys.)

  • Residents who fail to turn in keys and/or access cards will be billed $60 for a core change and $14 for a card replacement. Rooms must be secure (windows and doors locked and all appliances unplugged) before leaving. Detailed information is posted in the residence halls. All access cards will be deactivated at 10 p.m., Friday, Dec. 17.

  • Key and card replacements will be ordered Saturday, Dec. 18, so keys and cards cannot be returned after check-out has ended.

  • Only students who have Friday evening finals may stay in their rooms until 10 a.m., Sat., Dec. 18. These students must make arrangements with their hall directors no later than 9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 10.

  • Mopeds, scooters and other gasoline-powered vehicles cannot be stored in rooms over break (or at any other time). If present, they will be removed by Public Safety and stored at the owner’s expense.

  • Residence Life staff will be entering all rooms to ensure that windows are closed, lights are out and doors are locked. Any clearly visible judicial and residence hall regulation violations will be pursued with the student(s) in violation.

  • Pencader residents who ask to remain in their rooms over break will be billed a flat rate for the entire break period. Charges will not be prorated for residents who wish to stay for only a portion of the break. Residents of Pencader and Ray Street who wish to stay during the semester break must sign up with the Office of Residence Life.

The Office of Residence Lifea advises parents to begin preparing now by considering what it will be like to have their students back under the same roof with them. They have had almost four months of independence, so there might be some adjustments needed on issues of privacy, curfews and mealtimes. Suggestions for smoothing the transition are available at [www.udel.edu/Counseling/page17parents.htm].

All University offices close at 5 p.m., Thurs., Dec. 23, and will remain closed until 8 a.m., Mon., Jan. 3.

    Winter Session move-in is from 2-9 p.m., Sun., Jan. 2, and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Mon., Jan. 3.

    Spring semester move-in is from 2-9 p.m., Sun., Feb. 6, and from 9 a.m. -3 p.m., Mon., Feb. 7.
