‘Women in War and Conflict’ series set through April 15
2:27 p.m., Feb. 23, 2004--The Women’s Studies Interdisciplinary Program is offering a lecture and film series on “Women in War and Conflict.”
The free public series includes:
- “Daughter from Danang,” a film about a Vietnamese child raised in Tennessee and her efforts to reconnect with her family in Vietnam, with commentator, Sue Cherrin, assistant professor of women’s studies, cosponsored by Women’s History Month Film Series, 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, 204 Kirkbride Hall;
- “Sisters in Resistance,” a film about heroism and courage against Nazi oppression during World War II, with commentator James Brophy, associate professor of history, cosponsored by the Women’s History Month Film Series, 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, 204 Kirkbride Hall;
- “Militarism and Empire: Some Feminist Clues,” a lecture, followed by a reception, with Cynthia Enloe, Clark University, on ways militarization continues in “postwar” or “postconflict” societies and how militarizing processes serve to privilege certain men and forms of masculinity, cosponsored by the Greater Philadelphia Women’s Studies Consortium, 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, 204 Kirkbride Hall; and
- ”Appropriating Women’s Issues in a Time of War: RAWA, Afghan Women and the Continued Need for Resistance,” slides and lecture, followed by a reception, by Anne Brodsky, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, on her trips to Afghanistan and the ongoing revolution of attitudes, beliefs, ideas and education led by Afghan women, program coordinated by Hallie Bregman AS’06, and cosponsored by the duPont Scholars, Amnesty International and SAGE (Students Acting for Gender Equality), 7 p.m., Thursday, April 15, 127 Memorial Hall.
Other cosponsors include the Department of Political Science and International Relations and the Center for International Studies. The entire series is undertaken in association with the Greater Philadelphia Women’s Studies Consortium.
Women’s History Month Film Series cosponsors are the anthropology, English, history and sociology departments, the Black American Studies Program, the Center for Black Culture, the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, the Faculty Senate Committee on Cultural Activities and Public Events, the Honors Program, the Minority Discourse Group, the Office of Women’s Affairs and the Visiting Women Scholars Program.
