‘Calliope VIII’ showcases student musicians Nov. 1 at The Bob

12:15 p.m., Oct. 22, 2003--A one-of-a kind musical extravaganza takes center stage at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, in UD’s Bob Carpenter Center.

“Calliope VIII,” presented by the University of Delaware Performing Arts Series and the Department of Music, showcases a montage of vocal and instrumental talent at the University.

This popular event, an annual favorite since 1996, features more than 400 student musicians. Concert-goers will be treated to a kaleidoscopic line up—a trademark of “Calliope.”

The program ranges from steel band tunes like “Coffee Street” and “The Hammer,” to a choral arrangement of Rodgers & Hart’s “My Funny Valentine,” and from an orchestral performance of Sibelius’ “Finlandia,” to a wind ensemble rendition of John Williams’ “The Cowboys.”

UD musical groups slated to perform include Jazz Ensembles I & II, the Symphonic Band, the University of Delaware Chorale, the University Singers and Women’s Chorus, UD Wind Ensemble, University Orchestra and the 300-member Fightin’ Blue Hens Marching Band presenting the rousing finale.

All proceeds benefit UD’s Department of Music scholarship fund. General admission is $12, and all seating is reserved. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Bob Carpenter Center or Trabant University Center box offices. Call UD1-HENS for ticket information.
