Special events on Inuit culture set for October and November

11:45 a.m., Oct. 8, 2003--“Land of Ice, Hearts of Fire: Inuit Art and Culture,” a three-month exhibition of rare Canadian Inuit drawings continues through Sunday, Dec. 14, in the University Gallery, located on the second floor of Old College.

In a recent review in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Edward J. Sozanski called this exhibit “an exciting and significant event, a splendid visual examination of the way the Inuit have habituated over centuries to their often demanding environment.”

Several special events related to the exhibition are planned for October and November.

Changing Faces: Children's Workshop
Children will have the opportunity to discover the mysteries of the Inuit shaman, see their many faces in the art on display, hear about transformation myths and make their own masks celebrating traditional Inuit culture.

Conserving Inuit Art and Artifacts
Bruno Pouliot, objects conservator at Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library and adjunct assistant professor of art conservation at UD, will discuss the preservation and treatments of Inuit art and artifacts. Before coming to Delaware, Pouliot spent six years working with Inuit material as an objects conservator at the Prince of Wales Heritage Centre in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

Inuit observations on climate change video
“Sila Alangotak: Inuit Observations on Climate Change,” a 42-minute video from the International Institute for Sustainable Development will be shown continuously in observance of Earth Science Week.

Effects of freshwater flow from the Arctic on global climate
Andreas Muenchow, associate professor of physical ocean science and engineering in the UD College of Marine Studies, will discuss how fresh water, from melting Arctic ice and rivers, affects the salinity and circulation of the ocean and thus has a major influence on the Earth’s climate.
