Womens history activities set through March 30
1:30 p.m., Feb. 18, 2004--UD celebrates Womens History Month and this years theme, "Women Inspiring Hope and Possibility," with a host of activities through March 30. Events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
- Daughter from Danang is a documentary film about cultural misunderstandings and wounds left by war and occupation, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, 004 Kirkbride Hall, with Sue Cherrin, associate professor of womens studies;
- Killing the Girls: The Unsolved Serial Murders of Ciudad Juarez, a lecture by Julia Monarrex, a sociologist from Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico, about the unsolved murders of more than 140 young women beginning in the 1990s and continuing to the present, at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, in 209-211 Trabant University Center;
- The Hair Party, with cast members of Urban Bush Women in a pre-performance dialogue about black women's hair, heritage and self-esteem, at 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27, in Bayard Sharp Hall;
- Urban Bush Women, an award-winning performance troupe that fuses dance, music and storytelling with the spiritual traditions, cultural heritage and history of African Americans and African peoples from all over the world, at 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28, in Mitchell Hall, tickets are on sale at the Office of Womens Affairs 831-8063 and the Hartshorn Hall box office, 831-2204;
- Sisters in Resistance, a film about the intense friendship of four women who joined the French Resistance in the fight against Nazi oppression during World War II, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, in 004 Kirkbride Hall, with James M. Brophy, associate professor of history;
- Delaware Womens Conference with more than 120 exhibits, more than 40 workshop selections, an arts and crafts show and sale and keynote speaker Oscar-winning actress Rita Moreno, beginning at 8 a.m., Saturday, March 6. For registration information call the Office of Womens Affairs at 831-8063. The pre-conference registration deadline is Feb. 20;
- Play Hard, Play Smart, Play Safe, a kick-off event for spring break, sponsored by Sexual Offense Support (S.O.S.) and Sexual Assault Network of Delaware (SAND), with Debbie Puglisi Sharp, a sexual assault survivor and author of Shattered, at 7 p.m., Monday, March 8, Trabant University Center Theatre;
- Sisters in Cinema, an informative, funny, sobering, and inspiring documentary film that tells the stories of black women filmmakers, with filmmaker Yvonne Welbon, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 004 Kirkbride Hall;
- Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault: Staying Safe During Spring Break, with Rick Woodcock, 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 131 Sharp Hall;
- The Vagina Monologues, performances at 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 10, students $5 in advance/$8 at the door, general public $10 in advance/$15 at the door; Thursday-Friday, March 11-12, students $7 in advance/$10 at the door, general public $15 in advance/$20 at the door, Mitchell Hall;
- Blue Hen Women: A Photographic History of Women at the University of Delaware, March 11-12, exhibition open Thursday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Perkins Student Center Gallery;
- Bus trip, Saturday, March 13, to the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), Washington, D.C. NMWA is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists. The bus leaves from Perkins Student Center at 8 a.m. Tickets are $20 a person. Admission to the museum is covered by the Office of Womens Affairs. Tickets are available at UD box offices at the Bob Carpenter Center and the Trabant University Center or through Ticketmaster at [www.ticketmaster.com]. Ticket sales end Feb. 27. - Benefit concert with singer/songwriter Ruth Gerson, who will meet with students, from 12-12:45 p.m., Sunday, March 14, to talk about running a record label, followed by a performance in The Scrounge, Perkins Student Center;
- No Secret Anymore: The Times of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, a film that chronicles the lifelong partnership of the two women who founded the modern lesbian civil rights movement, with Julia Ericksen, professor of sociology at Temple University, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 16, 004 Kirkbride Hall;
- Yo Soy Latina, playwright Linda Nieves-Powells stories of six Hispanic women trying to find their identities and roles in society, at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, Mitchell Hall.
