Ghana’s presidential candidate visits campus today

11:35 a.m., Nov. 20, 2003--John Atta Mills, distinguished scholar and current presidential candidate for Ghana, is visiting campus Thursday, Nov. 20, to lecture on Africa’s political climate.

After his 10 a.m. arrival, Mills met in the Political Science Conference Room with faculty members Gretchen Bauer, professor of political science and international relations; Dan Green, professor of political science and international relations; Kiki Edozie, professor of African development and world politics; and Peter Weil, professor of anthropology.

After lunch at the Blue & Gold Club and a 1:30 p.m. meeting with Provost Dan Rich, Mills will give a 2 p.m. seminar in Room 006, Willard Hall Education Building entitled “Good Governance in Africa: Basic Issues and Concerns.”

The seminar, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a 3 p.m. question-and-answer session facilitated by Edozie and closing remarks by Green.

The former vice president of Ghana from 1996-2000, Mills continues to be a vital agent of change and an important public voice for public affairs in Africa. To increase global awareness and continue his crusade for political justice and economic stability in developing African nations, he is touring Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom before returning to Ghana to resume his race in the 2004 presidential election.

For more information about Mills’ visit, call Edozie at 831-1939
