Silent art auction, faculty exhibition begins April 8

10:30 a.m., April 3, 2003--The annual art exhibit by members of UD’s Department of Art faculty will have a new twist this years: Works in the show will be auctioned to raise money for student scholarships.

“The art department faculty is enthusiastic about contributing works to the first combination exhibition and silent auction to fund scholarships for art majors,” Suzanne Austin Alchon, acting chairperson of the department, said. “We invite the University community and art lovers in the area to this showcase of art works by our multitalented faculty.”

The exhibition begins with a V.I.P. reception from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, and continues through Sunday, April 20, at the University Gallery in Old College.

The silent auction will begin with the V.I.P. reception, April 8, and continue through the bid closing reception, scheduled from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, when bidding will be closed in a staggered fashion, from 5:45-7 p.m.

Everyone in the art department will contribute to the exhibition and auction in their different fields of the visual arts, so that there will be a variety of art works and styles, Alchon said, including paintings by Larry Holmes, Rene Marquez and Robert Straight, photographs by Priscilla Smith and William Deering, prints by Rosemary Lane, book art by Martha Carothers, sculpture by David Meyer, ceramics by Victor Spinski and other works by visual communications faculty, Robyn Phillips-Pendleton, Raymond Nichols and Hendrik-Jan Francke.

All bidding must be done in person or by an attending proxy, and objects will not be auctioned for a price under the minimum set by the artists. Payment must be by cash or checks only, and the art works will not be released until April 21, when they can be picked up from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., in 104 Recitation Hall.

The University Gallery is located on the second floor of Old College. Exhibition hours are 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays, and 1-4 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays.

For more information, or to request an invitation to the receptions, call the art department at 831-2244.
