In the Heights

Richard Rodgers Theater, NY
10am departure from Newark

“In the Heights” began as an original musical conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda during his sophomore year at Wesleyan University. Upon graduating and returning home to New UYork, Miranda collaborated with director Thomas Kail to rework and restage the campus hit for a larger audience. The play was first seen at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in Connecticut and later the musical found a home at Off-Broadway's 37 Arts Theatre. After over 200 performances, its final Off-Broadway show on July 15th, 2007, and began preparations for a move to Broadway, which included enhancements to the script and score, as well as new additions to the cast and crew. The response was unprecedented: the musical was luring both traditional and non-traditional theatergoers and garnering a huge cache of accolades, including the Outer Critics' Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical.
“In the Heights” takes you on a journey through the Dominican American neighborhood of Washington Heights in Manhattan. The play looks at one of Manhattan's most vibrant communities, where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. The musical uses hip-hop, salsa, merengue and soul music to paint a story of love, self discovery and chasing your dreams. The story line introduces us to several characters each with a different dream. Usnavi courts Vanessa, and dreams of opening a bar back home in the Dominican Republic. Nina is in love with Benny, but her father is against their union because he wants Nina to complete her education at Stanford University, and is prepared to sell his business to finance her. Finally Abuela wins $96,000 in a numbers game. This unique cast of characters makes “In the Heights” feel like home.
