A Conversation with Michael Olivas

Michael A. Olivas is the William B. Bates Professor of Law and founder/director of the University of Houston's Law Center's Institute for Higher Education Law and Governance. Olivas' most recent book, “Colored Men” and “Hombres Aquí”, is a study of Supreme Court case, Hernandez v. Texas. This historic 1954 Supreme Court civil rights case preceded the Brown v. Board of Education decision by just days.
Brown v. Board of Education made racial segregation in public schools illegal, but in Hernandez v. Texas the court recognized, for the first time, that Mexican Americans constituted a separate group that was entitled to recognition and protection under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. |
