Library adds papers from Castle, Kaufman

ON THE GREEN | The UD Library recently received donations of the papers of two former elected officials who served the First State in national positions, adding to the Library’s collection of political papers that spans more than two centuries.

Former U.S. Rep. Michael N. Castle, a Delaware Republican, donated his papers from his years as the state’s lone member of Congress, where he served from 1993 until January 2011. His four decades of distinguished public service also included two terms as Delaware’s governor, from 1985-1992.

The Library also recently added the U.S. Senate papers and archives of Sen. Edward E. “Ted” Kaufman, a Delaware Democrat whose two-year Senate career concluded on Nov. 15 when newly elected U.S. Sen. Chris Coons was sworn in. Kaufman, who was appointed to the Senate seat vacated when Joseph R. Biden was elected vice president, was a top adviser to Biden during much of his political career.

The papers, which will be housed in the UD Library’s Special Collections, mark a substantial addition to an already significant cache of important materials held there and will enhance the University’s reputation as a go-to resource for political scholarship, says UD President Patrick Harker.

Susan Brynteson, vice provost and May Morris Director of Libraries, says the newest additions include papers and records in multiple formats, including written, recorded, electronic, media and web pages. “The UD Library has a strong commitment to the rich content of the papers and archives of elected officials,” she says.

Castle noted that during his tenure as governor and in the U.S. House of Representatives, he was well served by staff members, of whom more than two-thirds were UD graduates. His wife, Jane DiSabatino Castle, is a 1974 graduate in elementary education.
