Public Safety

Welcome to the Public Safety web site

The University of Delaware Department of Public Safety works to create an environment where people can feel safe to learn, work, live and visit and is committed to providing quality service and protection to the entire University community.

Reported crime is relatively low at the University of Delaware, but it is still important for the community to remember that the University is not immune from criminal activity—we share many of the crime and safety issues that exist everywhere. In partnership with the community and other local police agencies, UD’s Department of Public Safety works to prevent crime and resolve issues that affect students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Department of Public Safety is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA)

The men and women of Public Safety receive thorough, progressive training in order to provide police, security, and parking services for the campus community. The department is committed to excellence, ethical conduct, and diversity. The Department maintains and promotes respect for the individual rights and dignity of all persons and is dedicated to excellence in all of the services that are offered on a year-round basis. Anyone who has concerns regarding the conduct of any Public Safety employee, or who would like to receive a copy of the Annual Statistical Summary of complaints filed, is encouraged to contact Public Safety via e-mail (publicsafety@udel.edu); phone (302) 831-2222; or in person to discuss the matter.

Members of the University community can assist these efforts by practicing good personal safety habits, by promptly reporting suspicious activity and by discouraging participation in careless practices and behavior. Prevention is the key to reducing crime in our community, and that is a responsibility that belongs to the entire University community.
