Stop-smoking poster contest deadline extended 11:49 a.m., March 2, 2007--The submission deadline for the Show Me Don't Tell Me poster contest has been extended to Wednesday, March 7. Sponsored by the UD Nursing Center in association with the Department of Art, the contest is an opportunity for students to send a message to other students to stop smoking now. Research has shown that most antismoking programs for young people are not always effective, but that peer-designed posters can have impact. Posters offer an immediate, effective, direct, relevant and visual way for students to communicate to other students the harmful effects of tobacco and to encourage them to stop. The poster contest is open to currently enrolled undergraduates or high school students in Delaware, ages of 18-24. Complete contest information is available at [www.udel.edu/nursing/peerart]. A panel of judges from UD's art department and a student from the School of Nursing will review the entries, and 15 will be selected based on originality, pertinence to smoking cessation, visual appeal, quality of conceptual statement and relevance to the 18-24 year-old-age group. The 15 posters will be exhibited as part of the Nutrition and Dietetics Club Annual Health Fair, scheduled for March 21, at the Trabant University Center. Visitors to the fair will be asked to vote by secret ballot for People's Choice Awards. First prize is $750, second prize is $500 and third prize is $250. All others will receive an honorable mention award of $100. The awards will be presented at a reception on April 20. The poster project is coordinated by Evelyn Hayes, professor of nursing; Leta Aljadir, associate professor in the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences; and Ashley John Pigford, assistant professor of art. |
