Students advised to clean computers 2:04 p.m., Aug. 12, 2005--All UD students have been sent an e-mail advising them to make sure their computers are clean and protected before arriving on campus to help avoid problems with computers and connections to the UD network. The e-mail directs students to follow the step-by-step instructions at the Protect and Clean Your Computer section of the UD computer security web site at [www.udel.edu/security]. The steps include activating firewall software, installing current anti-virus software, installing security updates, using passwords for protection and removing spyware. Students also are warned that failure to follow all steps to clean and protect computers could result in losing network access. There is a fee for those who require University staff assistance in computer clean-up. Students also are warned that file-sharing has to be turned off. Students caught sharing copyrighted materials illegally will have their computer network access disabled for a minimum of 30 days, be required to bring computers to IT-User Services and pay a computer clean-up fee and be referred to the Universitys judicial system.
