Basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse highlight sporting events for UD alumni

8:29 a.m., Jan. 29, 2016--A variety of sporting events, including NBA basketball, professional ice hockey and a visit to California by the Blue Hens men’s lacrosse team, are available to University of Delaware alumni in coming weeks.

The UD men’s lacrosse team will visit Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California, on Saturday, Feb. 27, for a game against the University of Michigan. Alumni are invited to a dinner reception at the Newport Rib Company, with remarks by head coach Bob Shillinglaw, and to the game, which will begin at 7 p.m.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

Two NBA events are on the schedule, both involving the Portland Trail Blazers, although the Feb. 2 event in Oregon is sold out. It will feature an inside look at the world of professional sports by UD alumnus Chris McGowan, a member of the Class of 1996 who is president and CEO of the Trail Blazers, followed by a game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

One month later, on March 2, the Trail Blazers will visit the Boston Celtics at the TD Garden and alumni are invited to a pre-game reception at the Paulaner Bar, North Station, and the contest, with tip off at 7:30 p.m.

Alumni also have opportunities to take in professional hockey, with two American Hockey League games, in Hershey and Lehigh Valley, and an NHL game in Pittsburgh.

The Lancaster Alumni Club invites Blue Hens to take in a game between the host Hershey Bears and the Syracuse Crunch on Feb. 20, and Lehigh Valley alumni can watch the host Lehigh Valley Phantoms battle the Utica Comets on Feb. 27.

For NHL fans, alumni are invited to a game between the host Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres on March 29 at the CONSOL Energy Center.

Tuesday, Feb. 2, 5:30 p.m.: Portland Trail Blazers event sold out. UD alumnus Chris McGowan, president and CEO of the Portland Trail Blazers, will present an inside look at the NBA and professional sports prior to a game against the Milwaukee Bucks. The event is sold out.

Tuesday, Feb. 2, 6:30 p.m.: District Trivia Night. Blue Hens in the Washington, D.C., area are invited to Trivia Night at Penn Social.

Saturday, Feb. 6, 12:15 p.m.: UD Ice Hockey Alumni Weekend. The University of Delaware club ice hockey team invites former players for a pair of afternoon alumni games and an evening club team contest against the University of Rhode Island at the Fred Rust Ice Arena.

Saturday, Feb. 6, 2 p.m.: Raleigh Brewing Company. Blue Hen’s in the North Carolina Research Triangle area are invited to an outing at the Raleigh Brewing Company.

Tuesday, Feb. 9, 6 p.m.: District Sip and Paint. Alumni in the Washington, D.C., area will gather for sipping and painting at ArtJamz.

Thursday, Feb. 11, 6:30 p.m.: UD Chorale in Boston. The award-winning University of Delaware Chorale will perform at Emmanuel Church in Boston, and alumni are invited to a private reception and concert.

Saturday, Feb. 20, 5:30 p.m.: Hershey Bears ice hockey. The Lancaster Alumni Club will host a pre-game reception and an American Hockey League game between the Hershey Bears and the Syracuse Crunch at the Giant Center in Hershey. 

Thursday, Feb. 25, 7 p.m.: Brooklyn Winery. Alumni will gather to a private tour and wine tasting at the Brooklyn Winery.

Saturday, Feb. 27, noon: South Florida Bottomless Brunch. Blue Hens will gather for a “bottomless brunch” at the Wine Dive in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Saturday, Feb. 27, 4 p.m.: Blue Hens men’s lacrosse in California. Alumni can enjoy a dinner reception at the Newport Rib Company, then cheer on the Blue Hens men’s lacrosse team in a game against the University of Michigan at Lebard Stadium in Costa Mesa, California.

Saturday, Feb. 27, 5:30 p.m.: Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey. The Lehigh Valley Alumni Club will host a pre-game reception at the Hamilton Kitchen and Bar and an American Hockey League game between the host Lehigh Valley Phantoms and the Utica Comets at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Wednesday, March 2, 5:30 p.m.: Boston Celtics game. Boston area alumni are invited to a pre-game reception at the Paulaner Bar and an NBA game between the host Boston Celtics and the Portland Trail Blazers at the TD Garden.

Tuesday, March 29, 5:30 p.m.: Pittsburgh Penguins game. Blue Hens in the Pittsburgh area are invited to an NHL ice hockey game between the host Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres at the CONSOL Energy Center. The game will be preceded by a reception at the Red Ring Bar and Grill.
