Announcements

Two University of Delaware performing arts groups, one in music and one in theatre, have received support from the Delaware Division of the Arts, which recently announced its grants for 2016, awarding $2.95 million to 112 arts initiatives throughout the state. At UD, the Master Players Concert Series received $23,000 in project support for its 12th season, and the Resident Ensemble Players professional theatre group was awarded $72,000 in project support. "Art contributes to a quality of life that attracts businesses, strengthens education and positively impacts our state's economy," Gov. Jack Markell said in announcing the grants.

Awards

Spencer Szczesny, a member of Dawn Elliott’s research group in biomedical engineering at the University of Delaware, has won the Acta Biomaterialia student paper award for his primary contribution to the manuscript, “Interfibrillar Shear Stress is the Loading Mechanism of Collagen Fibrils in Tendon.” Szczesny, a doctoral candidate in bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania, made extensive use of UD’s Bioimaging Center in conducting the research.

Co-authored with Elliott, the paper sheds new light on how tendons transmit loads throughout the musculoskeletal system. The findings of the research should help in the development of repair strategies for tissue degeneration and guide the design of tissue engineered replacements.

The award will be presented at the Materials Science and Technology 2015 Meeting in Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 5.

Fellowships

Cheryl R. Richardson, assistant director of the Center for Teaching and Assessment of Learning, was selected in a highly competitive process and has received the Donald H. Wulff Diversity Travel Fellowship for the 2015 Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Conference in San Francisco in November. At the event, she will be recognized with five other recipients, present her poster, “Diversity Cognizant Faculty Development: Toward A Framework for Mindful Classroom Practice,” and participate in a roundtable session, “‘Don’t Remain Silent!’ Strategies for Supporting Our Colleagues Via Micro-resistance and Ally Development.”

Service

Beth Mineo, director of Center for Disabilities Studies, will serve as the Governor’s Advisory Council for Exceptional Citizens’ appointee to Delaware’s Educational Technology Task Force. The task force, created by Senate Concurrent Resolution 22, will examine the current use of educational technology, assistive technology and instructional materials in Delaware’s public school systems and recommend strategies and goals to improve their use. The task force also will provide plans on how to fund, implement and assess these strategies and goals.
