Franklin Newton to serve as acting vice president, chief of staff at UD

8:08 a.m., June 5, 2015--Franklin A. Newton, assistant dean of undergraduate services in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, has been appointed acting vice president and chief of staff at the University of Delaware, effective July 1, incoming Acting President Nancy Targett announced today. 

On March 13, the Board of Trustees announced that Targett, currently dean of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, would become acting president on July 1, while the search for the University's next president is underway.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

"Frank Newton will be a valuable asset both to me and to the University in this new role," Targett said. "He has a deep understanding of our institution, extensive experience working with both students and faculty, and a knowledgeable perspective on many of the major issues facing UD and higher education in general. "

"As an alumnus and long-time employee of UD, I am eager to assist Dr. Targett and the entire campus, greater Newark and state communities in preparing for the next president’s arrival at the University.”

About Franklin Newton

Franklin A. Newton, who has worked with college and university students for almost three decades, came to UD in 1994 where he has held several positions, most recently as assistant dean in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment.  

A member of several national educational organizations, he has presented to and been a consultant for numerous organizations, municipalities and academic institutions. 

He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Framingham State University in Massachusetts, a master’s degree in education with a specialization in college student development from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of Delaware. 

Active in the community, Newton serves on the school board of Newark Charter School and the board of Chapel Street Players, a community theatre company in Newark with strong historical ties with UD.  

He lives in Newark with his wife, Amy, and their two children, Tom and Abby.
