Darryl Chambers, a doctoral student in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice and the lead research associate in the Wilmington Street Participatory Action Research Project led by Yasser Payne, associate professor of Black American studies, has been appointed to the new Wilmington Public Safety Strategies Commission. The commission, created by the Delaware legislature and controlled by Gov. Jack Markell, is studying such issues as police deployment, crime data and violence reduction strategies in an effort to address the high rate of violent crime in Wilmington.
Books
David Shearer, professor of history, has published a book, Stalin and the Lubianka: A documentary History of the Political Police and Security Organs in the Soviet Union, 1922-1953, Yale University Press, January, 2015.This documentary history is the first English-language exploration of Joseph Stalin's relationship with, and manipulation of, the Soviet political police. The book provides documented detail about how Stalin used these organs to achieve and maintain undisputed power. Written as a narrative, the book includes translations of more than 170 documents from previously secret Soviet archives.
