12:52 p.m., April 20, 2015--Fraternity brothers and friends of the late Ricky Barbour have banded together to create a lasting tribute to the popular University of Delaware alumnus.

“Ricky Barbour always had a smile on his face,” remembers his fellow UD Delta Tau Delta fraternity brother, Michael Schlegel of the Class of 1988.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

That smile will be on the minds of his friends, fraternity brothers, alumni and others on Friday, May 1, as they come together for the 14th annual Ricky B Memorial Golf Outing at the Chisel Creek Golf Club in Landenberg, Pennsylvania.

This year, Schlegel, a board member of The Ricky Barbour Scholarship Fund, and fellow organizers of the annual golf tournament will celebrate reaching their goal of raising $50,000 for an endowed scholarship in Mr. Barbour’s name.

Mr. Barbour, of the Class of 1986, was killed in an armed robbery in 1991 at an ATM in Philadelphia.  A beloved friend and varsity wrestler, he is remembered on the anniversary of his death with a golf tournament in his honor.

“We started out as a small group playing golf in Rick’s memory on the anniversary of the murder and it's grown into an annual event averaging 120 golfers,” said Patrick Armstrong, a 1986 graduate who also received an MBA in 2000, and board chair of The Ricky Barbour Scholarship Fund. “Our proceeds go to the endowment helping to fund a UD student's law school pursuit.”

When the scholarship fund was created in 2002, a surprise award was given directly to a graduating UD senior headed to law school. Due to the growing popularity of the golf event, the members of the Ricky Barbour Memorial Scholarship Fund have worked with the University to create an official, endowed scholarship through Student Financial Services, allowing the scholarship to live on in perpetuity.

That scholarship has helped UD students achieve their law pursuits at the nation’s top law schools, such as Georgetown University, Vanderbilt University, Boston College, UCLA, New York University and others.

At the May 1 event, the Ricky B board, including Armstrong, Schlegel and others, will present a $50,000 check to the University, as well as meet this year’s recipient, Logan Hayes, of the Class of 2014.

The scholarship is awarded to an upperclassman with plans to attend law school after graduation, just like Mr. Barbour.
