Blue Hen 5k
Sixth annual run, walk one of 60-plus events set for Alumni Weekend 2014
8:02 a.m., April 7, 2014--The sixth annual Blue Hen 5K Run/Walk will be held during University of Delaware's Alumni Weekend and will be both an individual and college competition.
Hosted by the Office of Alumni Relations, the Blue Hen 5K will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 8, and it will take participants on a scenic tour of Creek Road and the Pomeroy Trail.
True blue spirit
During the finish line awards ceremony at 10 a.m., the fastest overall runners, the fastest alumni runners and the top three males and females in each age category will be recognized.
In addition, there will be prizes awarded for the runner displaying the most UD spirit.
A new component of the race this year is the Double Del competition. The fastest Double Dels (married alumni) will receive a special award for their best combined time.
UD's various academic and administrative units will also compete against one another in a bid for the rights to the President's Cup, based on participation and the top finishers of that group.
The current holder of the cup is the College of Arts and Sciences, and past winners of the President's Cup include the College of Education and Human Development and the College of Health Sciences.
Prior to the 5K Run/Walk, there will be a Kids Fun Run at 8:30 a.m. that will take place around the turf on Laird Campus.
The Blue Hen 5K is sponsored by the UD Barnes and Noble Bookstore, Deer Park Tavern, Pepsi, the Oppenheimer Group and Therapeutic Massage and Wellness.
Participants will have the opportunity to visit the Deer Park Tavern’s Roaming Raven food truck, enjoy post-race snacks and beverages and receive a short massage.
The race is open to the public. More information about the event schedule, registration instructions and other information is available here.
Held the first weekend after Commencement each year, Alumni Weekend is a tradition that is growing in popularity and in size.
The weekend encourages alumni, friends, and families to return to campus and celebrate the qualities that make UD unique. It also provides an opportunity to reconnect with friends and professors and to witness the remarkable changes at the University over the past few years.
More than 5,300 Blue Hens and friends attended in 2013, participating in activities such as Mug Night, the Blue Hen 5K, reunions, President Patrick Harker's State of the University address, the R&B Lounge and the Alumni Wall of Fame Ceremony. More information is available at the Alumni Weekend website.
