Alumni Weekend run
Alumni Weekend's Blue Hen 5K moves to Sunday, gets new course
10:33 a.m., April 15, 2013--The fifth annual Blue Hen 5K Run/Walk will be held during University of Delaware's Alumni Weekend, and it will be both an individual and group competition.
Hosted by the Office of Alumni Relations, the Blue Hen 5K will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 2, and it will take participants on a scenic tour of Creek Road and the newly constructed Pomeroy Trail.
Make winter count
At the finish, which will be outside of Thomas McKean and James Smith residence halls on the Laird Campus, the fastest overall runners, the fastest alumni runners and the fastest runners in each age category will be recognized. In addition there will be prizes awarded for the runner displaying the most UD spirit and team prizes.
UD's various academic and administrative units will also compete against one another in a bid for the rights to the President's Cup, based on participation and the top finishers of that group. The current holder of the cup is the College of Arts and Sciences and past winners of the President's Cup include the College of Education and Human Development and the College of Health Sciences.
Prior to the 5K Run/Walk, there will be a 1K Kids Fun Run at 8:30 a.m. that will take place around the turf at Laird Campus.
The Blue Hen 5K is sponsored by the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Barnes and Noble UD Bookstore, Deer Park Tavern, Pepsi and Brandywine Electronics.
The event, which is open to the public, is organized by Races2Run.com. The event schedule, registration instructions and other information are available online.
Held the first weekend after Commencement each year, Alumni Weekend is a tradition that is growing in popularity and in size. This year’s event will be held May 31-June 2. More than 3,900 Blue Hens and friends attended in 2012, participating in activities such as Mug Night, the Blue Hen 5K, President Patrick Harker's State of the University address and the Alumni Wall of Fame Ceremony.
