April 30: Steel Band Festival to feature Ray Holman

Noted artist to perform Friday at Baby Grand, Saturday at UD

12:11 p.m., April 5, 2011--The University of Delaware Department of Music and Institute for Global Studies has announced that legendary steel pan artist Ray Holman will perform alongside Delaware Steel, UD’s steel pan ensemble, at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 30, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. 

Holman’s performance is being held in conjunction with UD’s third annual Steel Band Festival, which is taking place on the green between the Amy E. du Pont Music Building and the Roselle Center for the Arts from noon to 6p.m. Saturday, April 30. Admission is free and Caribbean food will be available on site.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Tickets for the concert cost $21, or $18 for senior citizens and students, and can be purchased through the REP Box Office in the Roselle Center for the Arts from noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or by calling 302-831-2204. A $2 processing fee applies).

Holman also will perform at noon, Wednesday, April 27, as part of the Institute for Global Studies’ Global Music Hour series.

Holman is one of the world’s most renowned steel drum performers. He has collected several prestigious musical awards over the years including the Hummingbird Silver Medal of Merit from the government of Trinidad and Tobago and a Pan Legend Award from the New York Folk Arts Institute and the U.S. Congress. 

He has performed at many major events, including the Super Bowl and the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, as well as in Canada, the U.S., Latin America, Japan and Europe. 

While in Delaware, he also will perform Friday, April 29, at 8 p.m., at the Baby Grand in Wilmington. Tickets may be purchased through the Grand Opera House website
