Osher's 'June a la Carte' lecture series highlights government, feminism, world politics, food

12:59 p.m., April 29, 2016--The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Delaware in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled “June a la Carte,” this year’s program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The week-long program includes timely presentations from UD faculty, Delaware Supreme Court Justice Randy Holland and award-winning Delaware chefs.

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

One of Thursday’s featured guests is Delaware chef Robbie Jester of Stone Balloon Ale House in Newark, a winning chef on the Food Network’s “Guy’s Grocery Games” cooking competition. Jester is slated to compete as a finalist in the show’s championship, airing this Sunday.

The week’s featured presenters and topics are:

Monday, June 6 — Great Political Documents

• U.S. Constitution — James Magee, Judge Hugh M. Morris Professor Emeritus of Political Science and International Relations, UD

• Magna Carta — Randy Holland, Delaware Supreme Court justice

Tuesday, June 7 — Feminism

• Modern U.S. Feminism — Anne Boylan, UD professor emerita, history

• Feminism Today — Pascha Bueno-Hansen, UD assistant professor, women and gender studies

Wednesday, June 8 — Multicultural Day

• From an Empire to a State: China’s Recent Transformation and its Problems — Yuanchong Wang, UD assistant professor, history

• Islam and Geopolitics in the Middle East: The Failure of Arab Spring and Beyond — Muqtedar Khan, UD associate professor, political science and international relations

Thursday, June 9 — Newark Cuisine Sampler

Enjoy food and stories from some of Delaware’s award-winning and renowned chefs.

• Gelato, Ryan German, owner, Caffé Gelato

• Dessert, Dana Herbert, owner, Desserts by Dana

The program takes place 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each morning for four consecutive days at UD’s Arsht Hall, 2700 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington. Light refreshments begin at 9 a.m. 

Registration for this program is open to the public. Participants of all ages are invited, and membership in the Osher Lifelong Learning program is not required. 

The registration fee is $50 for the entire series, which includes food tastings, daily coffee and snacks and free parking. Tickets may also be purchased for individual sessions, at $10 for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and $20 for Thursday. (To purchase individual tickets for Thursday, a ticket must be purchased for at least one other session or the whole series.)

About Osher Lifelong Learning

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at the University of Delaware are membership organizations that provide opportunities for adults 50 and over to learn, teach, and travel with their peers. 

There are no academic requirements for admission. The only requirements are interest in a continuing educational experience, support of the programs through participation, and the modest membership fee.
