If you are an undergraduate or graduate student, you may obtain a 1-year license for the Student Edition of Exceed from Hummingbird Communications, Ltd. The Student Edition is identical to the regular version of Exceed, except that its use is limited to one academic year. The software automatically expires and becomes unusable on August 15th of the summer following the academic year in which it was purchased. For example, if you buy a copy of his software in September, 2000 it will usable until August 15, 2001. The current price is $25/copy per PC. When it expires, you can re-license it for another year (for approximately $25/copy) and get the newest version as well.

NOTE: If you purchased the Student Edition of Exceed for the 1999-2000 academic year, it will be unusable after August 15th, 2000. You must purchase a copy of the 2000-2001 Student Edition and re-install the software according to the instructions below.

You must purchase Exceed online. Please see:

http://www.udel.edu/topics/connect/sw/exceed/docs/UD-Exceed-student-obtain.html

for information on purchasing Exceed.

NOTE: if you download the software from the purchase site, the file you download will install version 7.0 of Exceed. A customized-for-UD distribution of Exceed 7.0 is not yet available (see addenda, errata ,and updates for more details). It is recommended that you obtain and install the customized-for-UD distribution of Exceed 6.2 from the TSC. The on-line documentation is for version 6.2 and may not be valid for version 7.0.

In order to get a copy of Exceed from the TSC, you must obtain a proper receipt from the Hummingbird online sales page. When you submit a purchase, you will receive an e-mail containing the URL for your personal download page.

This web page is your receipt. Bookmark the URL and print a copy of the message.

  1. You may download the installation software from the web page. If you use this option, you will need to customize the software by hand as described below. Furthermore, the time required to download the ~50 Mb file may be several hours via a modem. And, as noted above, the version you download is not fully supported by UD at this time.
  2. You may obtain an already-customized copy of the software on a CD in the Technology Solutions Center (002B Smith Hall). You must bring:
    1. your student ID card (UD1 card);
    2. proof of purchase (either a printed copy of the "live order" web page or the URL for that page); and
    3. a blank, writable CD-R. These are sold at the University Bookstore.

Be sure to specify whether you purchased the version for Windows 95/98 or for Windows NT/2000.

It's a good idea to call ahead (831-8895) to ensure that a copy of the software will be waiting for you.

We recommend that you get the customized CD at the Technology Solutions Center (TSC) because it is simpler to install, will save you time, and is ready-to-use for UD computing systems.

Choice 1: Download the software (not recommended):

  1. Follow the installation instructions on the download web page (the URL that was given to you in the e-mail).
  2. Read Customizing Exceed For Use at UD and follow the step-by-step instructions for configuring Exceed for UD use.
  3. Read the instructions on the efficient use of Exceed in Customizing Your UNIX Composers Account and How to Use Exceed.

Choice 2: Get the customized CD from the TSC (recommended):

If Exceed is already installed on your system, you MUST un-install it before installing the customized version.
This includes upgrading from the 1999-2000 to the 2000-2001 Student Edition.
    1. If you have made your own personalized settings for Exceed, you should run Exceed's Xconfig program and take notes on your changes. You may want to use Xconfig to make the same personalizations after completing the new installation described below. You may also want to make a backup copy of your \user directory to avoid losing any customized files you have created. This directory is located in the main Exceed directory (C:\Program Files\Exceed.95 or C:\Program Files\Exceed.NT). Note that some customizations (such as .ses and .xs files) should be compatible between different version numbers of Exceed. Others (such as the Xconfig settings, saved in .cfg files) are only compatible with the same version of Exceed.
    2. On the Windows Taskbar, click the small, red, demon-shaped icon. When the Inetd Configuration Window opens, select Exit, and then select OK. (This program may or may not be running - if you don't see this icon, it is not running.)
    3. From the Windows Start button, select Settings / "Control Panel", and then double-click "Add/Remove Programs." Double-click the Exceed entry to start the un-installation process.
    4. Reboot the system.
    5. Delete the old Exceed directory and its contents, if the directory is still there (look for C:\Program Files\Exceed.95 or C:\Program Files\Exceed.NT).

    Installing the Customized Version
    1. Close all programs that are currently running and reboot the system.
If this is a Windows NT or Windows 2000 system, log in as "administrator" or as a user who has administrator rights. The setup program installs Exceed to be accessible to all users. The setup procedure will not run properly if you have not logged in with administrator rights.
    2. Check that the date on the system clock is correct. You can do this by double-clicking the clock on the Windows taskbar. Alternatively, from the Start menu, select Settings / "Control Panel" / "Date/Time".
    3. Insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive. The setup program should appear within 30 seconds. If it does not appear,
      1. Double-click the "My Computer" icon.
      2. Double-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive.
      3. Double-click the Msetup (or Msetup.exe) icon.
    4. Click "Install Exceed: Customized for UD".
    5. Click "Yes, I Agree" to agree to the License Agreement.
    6. Click "Next" and "Finish" to accept the default installation directories. You should not change the default directories without an important reason. (For example, you might need to choose a different hard drive if your C: drive is full.)
    7. We recommend selecting the "Register Later" choice when prompted. If you choose "Register Now", your computer must be connected to the network.
    8. The setup program may appear to freeze for 1-2 minutes as it completes the installation and registers Exceed with the operating system. If your hard drive light stays off for more than 2 minutes, you may need to terminate the setup program and contact IT - Help Center (831-6000) for assistance.
    9. The Exceed program folder will appear on your screen. The Xperf program will start automatically to optimize Exceed's graphical performance. Do not move the mouse while the test graphics are displayed on the screen.
    10. When the setup process completes. click "OK" in the dialog box that notes that the software was installed, and click "Yes" when prompted to reboot.
    11. You can create a desktop icon (shortcut) to Exceed by running a program available on the Windows Start menu. Select Start / Programs / Exceed / "Create Desktop Icon." (This will not work in Windows 2000 - to add a shortcut to the desktop, find the icon in the Programs menu, right-click on it and select "Create Shortcut" from the menu, and the drag the icon to the desktop.) These icons are described further in How to Use Exceed.
Exceed has been fully customized for use at UD. You're now ready to start using Exceed! To make the most efficient use of Exceed, follow the instructions in Customizing Your UNIX Composers Account and How to Use Exceed.

For more information, consult the locally produced documentation and the complete Exceed manual set on your hard drive. From the Start menu, select Programs / Exceed / Documentation. The Exceed manuals are in Adobe .pdf format, which can be read with the Adobe Acrobat Reader. To install the Acrobat Reader, load the CD as described above. Then click on "Install Acrobat Reader."
