Exceed 6.2 CDs obtained from the Technology Solutions Center (TSC) have already been customized for UD. If your CD was made by the TSC, skip this document and refer next to Customizing Your Composers Account and How to Use Exceed. However, if you bought your copy of Exceed from a third party vendor or directly from Hummingbird Communications, Ltd., continue with this document.

NOTE: If you downloaded the Exceed Student Edition installer from the purchase web site since September, 2000, the file you downloaded installs version 7.0 of Exceed. These instructions were written for Exceed 6.2, and have not been fully revised for version 7.0 - an attempt has been made to note differences between the two versions, and supply suitable alternatives for version 7.0, but these changes have not been fully tested. We recommend that you obtain a customized copy of version 6.2 from the TSC, otherwise some features described in other documents may not be available to you.

Steps to Customize Exceed

There are two parts to customizing Exceed. You must:
  1. Download and install UD-customized files in your Exceed user directory.
  2. Make changes to the Exceed configuration.

Download The UD-Customized Files

[
back to top]
  1. Download a self-extracting archive of customized Exceed files. This is a set of seven files that should be stored in your Exceed user directory. If you used the default installation directory, the path is C:\Program Files\Exceed.95\user for Windows 95/98 systems, or C:\Program Files\Exceed.NT\user on Windows NT or 2000 systems. The archives are set to unzip the files into the default path but will allow you to change the path before unzipping.

download custom files for Windows 95/98           download custom files for Windows NT/2000

NOTE: The files are the same for all versions of Windows; the two archives differ only in the path to which they extract the files.

    The files are named:

    appdb.txt
    hostdb.txt
    localunix.ses
    localxstart.xs
    setupunix.ses
    setupxstart.xs
    xstart.ini

Note: In Exceed 7.0 the paths where these files are stored is different. On Windows 9x/ME machines, extract the files to:

    \WINDOWS\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.00\Exceed

On Windows NT 4.0 machines, extract the files to:
    \WINNT\Profiles\All User\\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.00\Exceed

On Windows 2000 machines, extract the files to:
    \Documents and Settings\All Users.WINNT\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.00\Exceed

Then you will need to download the following two files and replace the files of the same name in the appropriate directory:

    localunix.ses         setupunix.ses

(Right-click on the filenames above and choose "Save Link As..." or "Save Target As...")

Customize The Exceed Configuration Files

[
back to top]
  1. There are two ways to make the configuration changes to Exceed:

    1. Make the changes manually using the Xconfig utility that was installed with Exceed. Instructions are below in Creating the Customized Configurations Manually

      OR

    2. Download two additional files that have already been configured (you can only use this option for Exceed 6.2). Instructions are below in Downloading the Customized Configuration Files.

Option A: Creating the Customized Configurations Manually

[
back to top]

Run Xconfig from the Exceed program group and make the changes described below. Entries preceeded by an "*" require action. Others entries will already be set as described. All changes are the same for the Windows 95/98 and NT/2000 versions of Exceed. Versions 6.2 and 7.0 are also the same, except as noted.

The following steps create the primary configuration file, "exceed.cfg".

  • * Double-click the Input icon (in Exceed 7.00, these options are split into two separate groups - the first five options are under Keyboard Input, and the others are under Mouse Input).
    • The Primary and Alternate keyboards should both be us.kbf.
    • * Check the box labeled Allow Clients to Modify Keyboard Mapping.
    • The Alt Key should be set to Left to Windows, Right to X.
    • * Exceed 7.00 only - set the Windows Key to To Windows.
    • The Shift Key should be set to Map Both Left and Right.
    • Exceed 7.00 only - the default Mouse Wheel setting (Wheel Movement invokes macro) is ok.
    • The box labeled Middle Button Emulation should be checked.
    • The default Click Interval and Movement Threshold (100 and 2) should be ok.
    • * Click OK to close the Input dialog box.
  • * Double-click the Communication icon.
    • * Select XDMCP-query for Mode.
    • * Click the Configure button.
    • * Type copland.udel.edu into the field labeled Connect Host.
    • The Display ID and Display Class should be left as is, and the Key field should be left blank.
    • The box labeled Exit Kills All Clients should already be checked.
    • The rest of the default values should be left alone (and can't be changed in Query mode anyway).
    • * Click OK to close the XDMCP Startup Modes dialog box.
    • * Click OK to close the Communication dialog box.
  • * Double-click the Security icon.
    • * Select the radio button labeled Enabled (no host access)
    • * Check the box labeled Allow Clients to Modify Host Access Control List.
    • Leave the other two boxes unchecked (Enable User Access Control List and Enable Extension) and all of the other values at their defaults.
    • Do NOT set a password, unless you want to restrict access to Xconfig. If you set a password you will be required to enter it before you can make any configuration changes in the future. We don't recommend setting a password on personal computers.
    • * Click OK to close the Security dialog box.
  • * Double-click the Protocol icon.
    • * Check the box labeled Allow Old X11 Bugs.
    • The two pallete-related entries should be checked (Pad Depth 1 Pixmaps To 32 Bits and Use 32 Bits Per Pixel for True Color).
    • The other boxes should remain unchecked.
    • Leave the default Extensions unchanged.
    • * Click OK to close the Protocol dialog box.
  • * Double-click the Screen Definition icon.
    • You should be on the Screen 0 tab:
      • The radio button labeled Monitor(s) To Use For Screen should be selected and its value set to 1.
      • The Window Mode should be set to Multiple.
      • The Server Visual should be set to Auto Select.
      • The box labeled Panning should be checked, Speed set to Slow and Amount set to 25.
      • The settings for Root Size should be: Width = 0, Height = 0
      • The box labeled Auto Load XRDB should remain unchecked.
      • * Set the Window Manager to Native.(Note: this is NOT the same as Default to Native, which is the default setting.)
      • The boxes labeled Use Native WM for Embedded Clients and Fit Window To Display should remain unchecked.
      • The box labeled Cascade Windows should be checked.
    • * Click on the Common Settings tab:
      • The Native Window Manager Focus Policy should be set to Click.
      • The box labeled Enable Server Reset should be checked.
      • * Check the box labeled Exit on Server Reset.
      • * Uncheck the box labeled Close Warning on Exit.
    • The settings on the Monitor Info tab are set automatically by the installation program.
    • * Click OK to close the Screen Definition dialog box.
  • No changes are necessary in the Performance dialog box.
  • No changes are necessary in the Video dialog box.
  • * Double-click the X Selection icon.
    • * Select CLIPBOARD for X Selection Associated with Edit Operations.
    • * Check the boxes labeled AutoCopy X Selection and AutoPaste To X Selection.
    • The box labeled Copy On Focus Loss should remain unchecked.
    • * Click OK to close the X Selection dialog box.
  • * Double-click the Font icon.
    • * Click the Font Database button.
    • * Check the box labeled Automatic Font Substitution.
    • All other settings should be left at their defaults.
    • * Click OK to close the Font Database dialog box.
    • * CLick Close to close the Font Settings dialog box.
  • * Double-click the Troubleshooting icon.
    • * Uncheck the box labeled Enable Log.
    • All boxes in this window should now be unchecked.
    • * Click OK to close the Troubleshooting dialog box.
  • * Double-click the Transports icon.
    • * Change the Broadcast Address to 128.175.255.255
    • All other settings should be left at their defaults.
    • * Click OK to close the Transports dialog box.
  • * Exceed 7.0 only - double-click the Power Management icon.
    • The options in this dialog box control how your machine's power saving (sleep) mode will behave when Exceed is running. The default settings are set to prevent your machine from entering sleep mode at any time while Exceed is running. If this is not desirable (for instance, your machine is a laptop and you expect to be running Exceed while on battery power) then you will want to change these settings. More information is available by clicking the Help button.
  • * Click on the File menu and select Exit.

Next, create the second configuration file, "passive.cfg" by re-running Xconfig and following the instructions below. (The changes are the same regardless of whether you are running Windows 95/98 or NT/2000.)

  • * Select Save As... from the File menu.
  • * Change the name of the file to passive.cfg, and click Save. (Keep it in the same path as exceed.cfg).
  • The Xconfig window should now have the heading "passive.cfg - Xconfig".
  • * Double-click the Communication icon.
    • * Change the Mode to Passive.
    • * Click OK to close the Communication dialog box.
  • * Double-click the Security icon.
    • * Select the radio button labeled Enabled (no host access)
    • Leave all other settings unchanged.
    • * Click OK to close the Security dialog box.
  • * Click on the File menu and select Exit.

Finally, refer to Customizing Your Composers Account and How to Use Exceed to complete the Exceed customization and to help you get started.

Option B: Downloading the Customized Configuration Files

[
back to top]

There is a set of two customized configuration files accessible from the University's web server. These files were created with version 6.2 of Exceed, and will not work with any other version, including version 7.0. As a precaution, first make a backup of your original "exceed.cfg" file (located in the user directory C:\Program Files\Exceed.95\user or C:\Program Files\Exceed.NT\user) before downloading the replacement files. The download is a self-extracting archive containing two files named "exceed.cfg" and "passive.cfg" which should be stored in the Exceed user directory. The archives are set to unzip the files into the default path for the respective operating systems, but will allow you to change the path before unzipping.
