Patrick Harker, UD president, is featured in the September issue of PRISM, the publication of the American Society for Engineering Education. He said the presidency was appealing because UD “is a gem of an institution. The citizens of Delaware are very supportive of their institutions of higher education and see education as driving economic growth and social progress in the state.”

Dewey Caron, professor of entomology and wildlife ecology, was quoted in a Sept. 10 Washington Post story about this year's reduced honey crop. Caron also was quoted in a Sept. 7 News Journal story about honeybee deaths.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Sept. 10 San Jose Mercury News story about the reshaping of the Hewlett Packard board in the wake of scandal. Also, Elson was quoted in a Sept. 2 News Journal story about an international consulting firm opened in Delaware by former FBI director Louis Freeh.

Conrado (Bobby) M. Gempesaw, dean of the Lerner College of Business and Economics, was quoted in a Sept. 9 News Journal story about a UD-Exelon partnership to create an academic trading floor.

Muqtedar Khan, associate professor of political science and international relations, and Ismat Shah, professor of materials science engineering, were quoted in a Sept. 9 News Journal story about Americans converting to Islam. Also quoted were several UD students, including Ahmad (Drew) Marshall, Ray Duran, Amani Alkotf, Marjorie Belez and Sania Mirza.

Leland Ware, Louis L. Redding Chair for the Study of Law and Public Policy, was quoted in a Sept. 9 News Journal story about the absence of black justices on the Delaware Supreme Court.

Carol Vukelich, director of the Delaware Center for Teacher Education, was quoted in a Sept. 5 News Journal story about a $3.6 million grant for a UD-Head Start partnership program. Vukelich said educators learned a great deal during the first stage of the project, which was funded by an earlier grant. A campus press conference announcing the grant also received coverage on WHYY-TV12's Delaware Tonight and on WILM-AM.

Kelley Appleman, doctoral student in the College of Marine and Earth Studies, was featured in a Sept. 4 News Journal story about her study on the importance of ecotourism in the region. Also quoted was Jim Falk, director of UD's Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service.

Willett Kempton, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was cited in a Sept. 2 New York Times story about vehicle-to-grid, or V2G, technology, in which plug-in hybrid vehicles can send power to the grid.

Jean-Philippe Laurenceau, associate professor of psychology, was quoted in a Sept. 2 News Journal story about couples and finances. "Finances, if not No. 1, is one of the top three areas that couples fight about the most, along with sex and children," Laurenceau said. "It's a touchy subject, and people don't want to get into it because it's laden with emotion and family history. It's not just the money; it's what the money represents."

James Newton, retired professor of Black American studies, was quoted in a Sept. 2 News Journal story about the beach during the era of segregation. Also, he was featured in a separate story about his own life with a focus on his art.

Thomas Sims, associate dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, was quoted in an Aug. 31 Lancaster (Pa.) Farming story about increases in enrollment in area agriculture colleges.

Saul Hoffman, chairperson of the Department of Economics, and Laurence Seidman, Chaplin Tyler Professor of Economics, were cited in an Aug. 31 Bloomberg News column about the earned income tax credit.

Louis Hirsh, director of admissions, was quoted in an Aug. 31 News Journal story about increasing diversity among students at UD.

Charles Epifanio, associate dean of the College of Marine and Earth Studies, was quoted in an Aug. 30 News Journal story about the drought and the crab population.
