Bill Hall, marine education specialist with the UD Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service, was featured in a June 6 Christian Science Monitor story about horseshoe crabs. Hall conducts an annual census of the horseshoe crabs.

Bill Sullivan, managing director of the Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware hotel on campus, was the subject of a June 6 feature in the News Journal. “Teaching is just as exciting as working in the hotel. It's fun for me, and there's nothing more rewarding than seeing my students succeed,” Sullivan told the newspaper.

James Newton, professor emeritus of Black American Studies and student Paul Ruiz, of the UD College Democrats, were quoted in a June 5 News Journal story about the historic presidential candidacy of Barack Obama. “The first African-American candidate is going to be nominated from a major political party in the United States,” Ruiz told the newspaper, adding, “That is huge.”

The UDon't Need It project, in which students can divert unwanted residence hall furniture and other items from the waste stream to be used by people in the community, was noted in stories in the June 4 Philadelphia Inquirer and News Journal.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a June 4 CFO story on executive compensation. Elson also was quoted in a June 3 Associated Press story about executive shakeups at Wachovia and Washington Mutual, in a June 2 Charlotte Observer story on the next Wachovia chief executive officer and in a June 2 Reuters story on the prospects of Apple's Steve Jobs facing a suit over stock options backdating.

Stuart Binder-Macleod, Edward L. Ratledge Professor and chairperson of the Department of Physical Therapy, and Jill Higginson, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, were featured in a June 3 WHYY-TV Delaware Tonight health segment on research aimed at helping stroke patients.

Marianne Green, assistant director of UD's Bank of America Career Services Center, was quoted in a June 2 News Journal story about resume preparation. "What I advise my students to do is have a one-page résumé but also have an expanded form résumé," Green said. "You're making it easy for [employers] but also giving them the option that they could see more if they choose to do so."

UD's Commencement, featuring an address by baseball great Cal Ripken Jr., was featured in the June 1 Philadelphia Inquirer, Baltimore Sun, News Journal and Delaware State News and in the June 2 Cecil Whig.

Jeffrey Harris, professor of finance who is on leave to serve as chief economist of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, was cited in a May 29 story in The Economist concerning high oil prices.

Joan Buttram, an educational researcher with the Delaware Education Research and Development Center, was quoted in the News Journal on May 18 concerning Frankford Elementary School's high marks in the Delaware State Testing Program. Buttram discussed her research, Beating the Odds: A Study of Delaware Schools, which looks at strategies used to improve students' performance.
