HRIM honors Newark Mayor Vance Funk

Fred DeMicco (right), ARAMARK Chair in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, presents the Renaissance Award to Newark Mayor Vance A. Funk III.

4:28 p.m., Sept. 7, 2006--Newark Mayor Vance A. Funk III became the first recipient of the newly established Renaissance Award given by UD's Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management (HRIM) Wednesday, Sept. 6, at a dinner in his honor at Vita Nova, the University's student-run restaurant.

The Renaissance Award was created by HRIM to honor an individual who has made Newark a better place to live and learn through community service.

“In addition to his efforts on behalf of the City of Newark, Mayor Funk has made a personal commitment to the Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management and to our students,” Fred DeMicco, ARAMARK Chair in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, said. “For example, the mayor took a leadership role in initiating the Taste of Newark on the UD campus that showcases the city's restaurant and beverage industries and promotes downtown activity. The event raises money for our department and for Newark beautification and environmental enhancement.”

The mayor said receiving the award was “one of the thrills of my life.”

“The relationship between the HRIM students and me is very special. Any time I ask for their help with an event, they are always there,” he said, adding that his love of the city of Newark and the University is long-standing, since his days as a student at UD. “I doubt that I'd have the success I have today if it wasn't for the faculty and staff at UD who guided me as I became the person I am today.”

The Renaissance Award dinner also saluted the 2006 Banfi Foundation Scholastic Tour, which supports a study trip for HRIM faculty and students to learn about the culture and cuisines of the Piedmont and Tuscany regions in Italy.
