Police arrest two Newark men for drug trafficking

8:45 a.m., March 30, 2007--Newark Police have arrested two Newark men for trafficking in designer drugs. Charged were Melec J. White, 20, and Melvin J. Smith, 25, roommates at White Knoll Apartments at 260 Elkton Rd., Newark.

Newark Police responded to a report of a disturbance at their apartment at 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 28, and noticed various drug paraphernalia in the apartment. A search warrant was obtained.

In the search on Thursday, March 29, officers recovered more than 25 vials of mint leaves that had been saturated with embalming fluid. The mixture, referred to on the street at "wet" or "illy," is placed into cigars or cigarettes and smoked, giving the person a high that can be similar to PCP. Officers also recovered additional mint leaves and suspected embalming fluids ready for packaging. Marijuana and various drug paraphernalia also were discovered, as well as a loaded .22 caliber handgun.

Both defendants were arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court #11 and were remanded to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of bail.
