TEST UD Library image collections now online

11:06 a.m., March 21, 2007--Images from digital collections at UD's Morris Library are now available on Flickr, an application that allows for the sharing of images and building of communities over the Internet. The project was implemented under the direction of Jaime Margalotti, assistant librarian in the Special Collections Department.

Selections from the “George Handy Bates Samoan Papers: Photographs,” a digital collection of more than 140 photographs of the people and scenes in Fiji, Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga by special investigator George Handy Bates, and the “Willard Stewart WPA & HABS Photographs,” a collection of 246 photographs of Delaware buildings and landscapes by photographer Willard Stewart, are currently available. Library users can view the Flickr site at [www.flickr.com/photos/uofdlibrary/].

Each image on Flickr is enhanced with three linking features, allowing visitors to view the full image with description, the entire image collection and the digital collection home page and copyright restrictions. These links appear on the Library's main Flickr page and in the description of each individual image. For more information, visit [www.flickr.com/people/uofdlibrary/].

There also is a Creative Commons designation for each image to make the rights of the user as clear as possible. For information about Creative Commons licenses, visit [creativecommons.org/about/licenses/meet-the-licenses].

Flickr supports subject access by allowing the owner to assign user-friendly tags, or keywords to images and by allowing the user to post the images to "pools" belonging to subject specific groups. University images are included in a variety of pools, including “Delaware,” “Historic and Old Photos” and “Libraries and Librarians.”
