UD Chorale to perform in Estonia and Scandinavia

3:20 p.m., March 20, 2007--All 54 student members of the UD Chorale, under the direction of Paul Head, associate professor of music, are bound for Estonia to compete from April 19-22 at Tallinn 2007, an international choir competition hosted by the Estonian Choral Association. The members of the Chorale are selected by audition from colleges across campus.

The UD students first will travel to Finland, stay with families in southern Sweden and move on to Copenhagen, performing mini concerts along the way, before going to Estonia for the competition.

The Chorale's performance won accolades at the prestigious 2005 American Choral Directors Association convention in Los Angeles, which led to a succession of invitations to perform.

The invitation to compete in the Estonian Choral Association is a great honor, Head said, and the timing was right as the date falls close to UD's spring break. The competition attracts choirs from Estonia and all over Europe and Asia. Thus far, the UD Chorale is the only one from the Americas.

The choirs compete in three categories: mixed choir, contemporary music and renaissance and baroque. Another separate piece is prepared to compete in the grand prix round. The competition is open to all choral categories, including mixed, chamber, female, male, children and youth choirs.

Thanks to generous support from the Office of the President, the Office of the Executive Vice President and the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences, all students will be able to participate in the Estonian competition, Head said. In the past, the Chorale has toured Scotland, France, Germany and Austria.
