Daffodil Lady thanks The College School with cake

1:18 p.m., March 23, 2007--Helping out with Daffodil Day on campus to benefit the American Cancer Society was a fun, learning experience for the students at UD's College School.

The icing on the cake for the students consisted of two large cakes, which were given to them in appreciation by Gwen Davis, administrative assistant in the office of the Vice President and University Secretary and campus coordinator of the Daffodil Day project. One cake read, “College School is # 1,” and the other read, “College School is #1 in Daffodil Sales.” College School students and staff sold $670 worth of daffodils.

Davis has a special link with The College School as her son Jim teaches there. “I am known as Mr. Davis's mother or as the Daffodil Lady,” she said.

According to Jeanne Geddes-Key, the Emily L. Phelps Director of The College School, participating in Daffodil Day was not only fun for the students but taught lessons in selling, collecting money, distribution, organization and good citizenship. The students took home letters about the project, collected the money, and older students helped sort the daffodils in Hullihen Hall, delivered them to homerooms and then distributed them to the students.

The student council, sponsored by Kathleen Krause, led the project. Student council students are Joshua Gornik, Julia Valladares, Jaylin Duprey, Tyler Pipkin, Kyle Wilson, Erin McKeown, Julianna Damese, Robbie Neall, Paige Edmonds and Nic De Stefano.

Daffodil Day sales set a new UD record, with more than $10,400 raised in sales on March 14.
