Apparel prof to speak at Hong Kong forum

Marsha Dickson, chairperson of fashion and apparel studies

1:34 p.m., March 23, 2007--The apparel industry is becoming increasingly global as Marsha Dickson, chairperson of fashion and apparel studies, can attest. She has traveled to Guatemala, Thailand, Vietnam, India and China and is slated to visit to the Dominican Republic this summer.

This month, the globetrotting professor is off to Hong Kong as an invited speaker at the Prime Source Forum, a conference for those working in the fields of sourcing, manufacture and delivery of apparel. More than 500 executives from apparel-related industries in countries from three continents, including a large delegation from China, are expected to attend Prime Source, and Paul Charron, chairman emeritus of Liz Claiborne, will give the keynote address.

The only educator from the U.S. to attend, Dickson has been invited to speak on “Education--the U.S. Perspective.” Her focus will be on encouraging students from other countries, especially those from Central America, to attend graduate school in the United States to enhance the industry in their own countries.

Some of the issues at Prime Source to be covered include sourcing trends, compliance and social responsibility, environmental issues, new technologies and the need for advanced training and the competition between China and India to become the leading manufacturing nation in the industry.

Dickson will not have any spare time in Hong Kong. She is scheduled to meet with faculty from Hong Kong Polytechnic to discuss research and student exchanges. She also is meeting with a student activist group that supports social responsibility in the industry. Another day will be spent in Shenzhen, China, where Dickson will tour a huge supply-chain complex, which houses everything needed for garment production in one location.

Dickson joined the UD faculty in 2005 from Kansas State University. Much of her research focuses on social responsibility in the apparel industry, and she serves on the board of directors of the Fair Labor Association and as a founder and director of Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Business. Dickson is a graduate of Kansas State University and received her master's and doctoral degrees at Iowa State University.
