Andersen honored with prestigious lectureship

4:52 p.m., March 14, 2007--Margaret L. Andersen, Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Sociology at the University of Delaware, has been awarded the prestigious Robin M. Williams Jr. Lectureship for 2007-08 by the Eastern Sociological Society.

The award, which is presented for outstanding scholarship in the field of sociology, will be presented formally during the annual meeting of the Eastern Sociological Society on Saturday, March 17, in Philadelphia. As part of the award, Andersen will deliver lectures at two schools during the coming year and will be a featured speaker at the society's conference in spring 2008.

The focus of Andersen's research is the sociology of race and gender.

She is the author of Thinking About Women: Sociological Perspectives on Sex and Gender, now in its seventh edition; and coauthor or coeditor of Race, Class and Gender, in its fifth edition; Understanding a Diverse Society, in its fourth edition; Sociology: The Essentials; and Understanding Society: Readings in Sociology. She also has served as the editor of Gender & Society.

Currently, Andersen is working on the life history of art collector Paul R. Jones, who donated his extensive collection of works by 20th-century African-American artists to the University. Another project is a photographic essay of women in the 20th century, On Land and On Sea: Women in the Rosenfeld Collection, to be published by the Mystic Seaport Museum in April.

Previous honors include the 2006 Jessie Bernard Award, which is given annually by the American Sociology Association in recognition of scholarly work that has enlarged the horizons of sociology to encompass fully the role of women in society, and the Sociologists for Women Feminist lecturer award, which is given annually to a person whose work benefits women.

At UD, she has received the excellence in teaching award, the outstanding teaching award from the College of Arts and Sciences and the faculty mentor award given by the McNair Scholars Program.

Andersen chairs the National Advisory Board for the Stanford University Center for Comparative Study in Race and Ethnicity, where she was a visiting professor. She also was a visiting professor in women's studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Joining the UD faculty in 1974, Andersen has served as the interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and as vice provost for academic affairs. She is a graduate of Georgia State University and received her master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The Robin M. Williams Jr. Lectureship was won in 2003 by one of Andersen's colleagues in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, Elizabeth S. Higginbotham, professor of sociology.
