Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Dec. 13 CNET News story about Google's stock option auction and in a Dec. 8 USA Today story about a settlement by Hewlett-Packard in a civil case regarding a boardroom spying scandal. The settlement includes corporate governance reforms and Elson told the newspaper they were a good step but added that rules were in place when the scandal broke. “The problem was, people who implemented those policies acted in improper manners," he said. Elson also was quoted in a Dec. 1 New York Times story about Kirk Kerkorian's retreat from GM.

Leland Ware, Louis L. Redding Professor for the Study of Law and Public Policy, wrote an opinion piece in the Dec. 8 News Journal concerning education and segregation in light of a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a Dec. 7 News Journal story on the Iraq Study Group report. Of the report's calls for diplomacy, Khan said, "I think it reflects the realization that unilateralism doesn't work. We need to work with the other nations in the region to help bring stability."

Meryl Gardner, associate professor of business administration, was quoted in a Dec. 6 Providence (R.I.) Journal story about the appeal of shopping malls, which in many places have become community centers. She said malls provide “a wonderful avenue to meet people and talk.”

Fred DeMicco, ARAMARK Chair in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management and department chairperson, was quoted in a Dec. 6 News Journal story about a new resort-style development in Laurel. DeMicco also was cited in the December issue of Lodging magazine, a publication of the American Hotel and Lodging Association, as a top innovator in the industry. The magazine said of UD's Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Managment, “The international and innovative elements appear to be infused in every aspect of the program.”

Sue Snider, UD Cooperative Extension Service food and nutrition specialist, was quoted in a Dec. 6 News Journal story about the E. coli outbreak at Taco Bell restaurants in the region. She said there is “no absolute guarantee” in any restaurant, and encouraged diners to send back food that is not properly heated.

Robert Schweitzer, professor of finance, was quoted in a story in the Dec. 5 issue of the Swedish newspaper Sydvenskan about credit cards.

Stuart Kaufman, professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a Dec. 5 Cox News Service story on the Senate confirmation hearing on the appointment of Robert Gates as the new Secretary of Defense, replacing Donald Rumsfeld.

Ben Yagoda, professor of English, wrote a review in the Dec. 3 New York Times about the new book by Linda H. Davis titled Charles Addams: A Cartoonist's Life.

Mark Miller, Emma Smith Morris Professor of Political Science and International Relations, was quoted in a Dec. 2 News Journal story about U.S. Sen. Joseph R. Biden (D-Del.) calling for new dialogue on Mexico and immigration. "We know that the immigration issue loomed large in the congressional elections we just held, and the national consensus is that something's got to give in terms of immigration. So making a statement like this makes a lot of sense as far as timing,” Miller said.
