Police seek suspects in 2 Monday incidents

1:49 p.m., Aug. 15, 2006--Newark Police are seeking three suspects who robbed a female University of Delaware student at 10:24 p.m., Monday, Aug. 14, near 60 N. College Ave.

Police said two female UD students were walking northbound on North College Avenue when two men approached them from behind, one grabbing the victim's purse and pulling it hard enough to break the strap.

The men fled into UD's Hollingsworth Parking Lot and got into a small silver car driven by a third man. The car was last seen heading westbound on West Cleveland Avenue near New London Road.

Newark Police also are investigating an incident that occurred at 6:14 p.m., Monday, at the Lieberman's bookstore on East Main Street. Police said a man in his mid to late 20s attempted to sell stolen books to the store and was pursued out of the store by a manager, who confronted the suspect as he entered a white 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier.

The suspect, who is described as about 6 feet tall and about 150-180 pounds, then pulled away, traveling west on Main Street. The store manager grabbed onto the driver's side window and held on until he was knocked off after being struck by a street sign. He was treated for what appeared to be minor injuries at Christiana Hospital.

The vehicle, with Maryland registration 2CC-C66, was found abandoned nearby.

Anyone with information on either of these cases is asked to contact the Newark Police at (302) 366-7110 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.

UD students are reminded to always be alert, to be aware of the surroundings and, when concerned about traveling, to contact UD Public Safety for escort service. For additional safety tips, see the special UD Public Safety web page [www.udel.edu/PublicSafety/safetytips.htm].
