UD presidential search committee named

Howard E. Cosgrove, chairman of the Board of Trustees: "Our challenge now is to identify a new president who will be able to build on the significant progress and innovation that have been the hallmark of the Roselle administration. We will conduct a national search to recruit the University's 26th president."

4:06 p.m., May 25, 2006--A committee of 15 individuals, including trustees, alumni, faculty and professional and salaried staff, has been appointed to search for the University of Delaware's next president, Howard E. Cosgrove, chairman of the Board of Trustees, announced May 25.

UD President David P. Roselle announced his plan to step down as president on or around May 1, 2007, at the semiannual meeting of the Board of Trustees on May 23.

"Our challenge now is to identify a new president who will be able to build on the significant progress and innovation that have been the hallmark of the Roselle administration," Cosgrove said. "We will conduct a national search to recruit the University's 26th president."

Cosgrove also emphasized the opportunities associated with the search. "This will be a diverse and inclusive search," he said. "At this critical time, the University is seeking advice and input from many different constituencies."

Chairing the search committee will be trustees Robert A. Fischer Jr., vice chairman of the board and a 1970 UD alumnus, and A. Gilchrist Sparks III. Other trustees on the committee include R.R.M. Carpenter III; Patricia A. DeLeon, who is also a professor of biological sciences; Robert W. Gore, who is also vice chair of the board and a 1959 UD graduate; Chelina N. Tirrell, the recent (2005) graduate trustee; John E. Wallace Jr. a member of UD's Class of 1964; and Mary Jane Willis. Also serving on the committee are Julie Moyer-Knowles, a member of the Class of 1982 and president of the University of Delaware Alumni Association; Mary Dozier, Amy E. du Pont Chair in Child Development; Eric W. Kaler, Elizabeth Inez Kelley Professor of Chemical Engineering and dean of the College of Engineering; Kathleen G. Kerr, director of residence life who received her doctorate at UD in 1998; Kenneth A. Lewis, Chaplin Tyler Professor of Economics; Maura Ruffing, staff assistant in University Development for the College of Arts and Sciences; and Donald L. Sparks, S. Hallock du Pont Chair of Agriculture and Natural Resources and chairperson of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences.

"I am thankful to all these individuals for their commitment to this important project," Cosgrove said. "They have selflessly agreed to devote the necessary time to assure that the board has an exemplary pool of candidates to consider for this post."

To assist the search, the Board of Trustees has retained the services of a leading higher education search consultant, R. William Funk of Korn/Ferry International.

"Mr. Funk has an impressive track record of helping universities around the country attract outstanding new leaders," Cosgrove said.

Cosgrove also announced a new University web site that includes information on the search process at [www.udel.edu/presidentialsearch].

The search process will be flexible, Cosgrove said, because “our goal is to get the best person. We don't want to let any rigidity in the process stop that from occurring.”

He said the Board of Trustees is anticipating a “rich pool of candidates.”

Cosgrove had high praise for Roselle, citing the “tremendous progress and momentum” he and his leadership team have achieved for UD.
