9:11 a.m., June 30, 2006--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni. Karen Rosenberg, chairperson of the Department of Anthropology, was featured in the July issue of National Geographic in a story titled “The Down Side of Upright,” which is about human beings walking on two feet. She discusses the human birth process, noting “the human female pelvis is a classic example of evolutionary compromise” that enables upright walking while still enabling the birth of a baby with a large brain and wide shoulders. Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair in Corporate Governance and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a June 29 Los Angeles Times story and in a June 28 Bloomberg news service story about the new chairman of the board of the Walt Disney Co. Elson also was quoted in a June 27 Wall Street Journal story about unfair stock options awarded by companies and a June 24 San Jose Mercury-News story about the focus of bloggers on the options scandal. YoUDee, the University's mascot, appeared June 27 on The Early Show on CBS. David Marshall, assistant professor of animal and food sciences, was quoted in a June 27 News Journal story about an international canine semen bank in Hockessin. Ed Kee, vegetable crops specialist for the UD Cooperative Extension Service and an instructor in Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, was quoted in a June 27 News Journal story about the effects of heavy rain and flooding in Sussex County. Stuart Binder-Macleod, chairperson of the Department of Physical Therapy, was quoted in a June 27 News Journal story about the field of physical therapy. Ben Fleury-Steiner, associate professor of sociology and criminal justice, was quoted in a June 25 News Journal story about the 10th anniversary of the murder of Anne Marie Fahey by lawyer Thomas Capano. "People have hung on every detail, and it has become a Shakespearean drama,'' he said. Joel Best, chairperson of the Department of Sociology, was quoted in a June 24 Los Angeles Times story about a controversy surrounding the number of homeless people living in Orange County, Calif. His book Damned Lies and Statistics includes information on similar controversies concerning other attempts to count the homeless. |
