UD prof heads classical association

1:44 p.m., Nov. 17, 2004--The Classical Association of the Atlantic States, one of the best-endowed regional professional organizations with a $1.3 million endowment, has named Nicolas Gross as its president.

Gross, associate professor of foreign languages and literatures, will serve a one-year term as president of the association, whose members include approximately 665 academic libraries and 1,000 professors and teachers.

Gross said the association gathered its unusually large endowment in the 1960s and 1970s when a classicist who had once worked in a development office volunteered to take over the group’s small investments, which Gross described as “next to nothing.’’ The volunteer managed the fund until it reached about $800,000, and then turned it over to a professional.

The association publishes Classical World, one of the most widely distributed classical periodicals in the U.S. The journal has 1667 subscribers, including readers in 36 countries abroad.

Although the association is a regional one, speakers from around the world attend its fall meeting where secondary school educators and postsecondary educators present papers on literary, historical, archeological and pedagogical topics.

The association serves classicists in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, as well as members and member-institutions in 36 countries. The group gathers for a business meeting each spring and presents the Adelaide Hahn Rome/Athens Scholarship, which allows a secondary school teacher a $4,000 stipend for summer study in Rome or Athens.
