Freshman Family Weekend set Sept. 16-18

11:51 a.m., Aug. 5, 2005--Freshman, transfer students, parents and family members are invited to celebrate their new association with UD during Freshman Family Weekend, Friday-Sunday, Sept. 16-18.

While anyone can participate in weekend activities, the focus is on acquainting new students and their parents with what is available within the University community. To see a detailed schedule of events with ticket prices, visit [www.udel.edu/parents].

Activities begin at 11 a.m., Friday, with selected works from the Paul R. Jones Collection of African American Art on view until 7 p.m. in Mechanical Hall. The free exhibition also will be open from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, and from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday.

At 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., on Friday, the Blue & Gold Club, 44 Kent Way, offers a buffet dinner with potato leek soup, tossed seasonal greens with balsamic vinaigrette, Nantucket-baked salmon with brandied shrimp sauce, coconut-crusted chicken with pineapple mango-chutney sauce, penne pasta a la vodka with assorted grilled vegetables, lyonnaise potatoes, fresh vegetable medley and assorted desserts.

Friday evening, the Chicago Comedy Company performs at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., in Mitchell Hall. The comedy group is known for its hilarious improvisations appropriate for the entire family.

For those who prefer a more physically active evening, UD’s Fred Rust Ice Arena offers open skating, with skate rentals, for students, parents and family members from 8-10 p.m., Friday.

On Saturday, enjoy the Freshman Family Weekend luncheon from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., in Kent Dining Hall. Lunch includes cheesy potato soup, spinach salad, turkey tettrazini, French dip sandwiches served au jus, mango chutney chicken salad on croissant, roasted garden vegetable wrap, carrot cake, New York cheesecake with seasonal berries, hot spiced apple cider, iced tea, and lemonade. The cost is $12.50 per person, and tickets are required. Students may not use their meal plan for this lunch.

Saturday’s schedule of activities includes:

  • Dessert with the Deans, 12:30-2:30 p.m., on The Green outside of Gore Hall;
  • Information Sessions about career services, study abroad and good study habits, 12:30-2:15 p.m,, in Gore Hall;
  • Ice skating, 1-3 p.m., in the Fred Rust Ice Arena;
  • Back to Class faculty lectures, 2:30-4:30 p.m., in Gore Hall;
  • Tailgate dinner and pep rally, 5-7 p.m., in the Delaware Field House; and
  • Football, UD vs. West Chester, 7 p.m., in Delaware Stadium.

Sunday opens with two brunches--one from 10 a.m.-noon at the Blue & Gold Club, and the other, Brunch-University Style, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Kent, Rodney, Russell and Pencader dining halls.

Then, students and parents can get a taste of what it’s like to live in Newark by attending Newark Community Day from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on The Green. Activities include live entertainment, mini-moto pocket bike racing, community booths, food and specials by Newark restaurants and merchants on Main Street. From 1-3 p.m., the ice arena again offers public skating.
