Oct. 9 ‘Run for Youth’ to help Katrina victims

2:51 p.m., Oct. 5, 2005--The first annual “Run for Youth,” sponsored by the Art of Living Club at UD, will be held 8 a.m.-12 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9. at Rockford Park in Wilmington.

Intended to raise awareness and promote a stress- and violence-free society, the 5K run/3K walk will be held in more than 28 cities nationwide. The international Art of Living Foundation emphasizes shared human values and raises funds for youth services and programs.

The event is cosponsored by the city of Wilmington’s Department of Parks & Recreation, and Delaware Lt. Gov. John C. Carney Jr. will speak. The event, with a $25 registration fee, is open to the public. Free T-shirts and refreshments will be provided. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the walk begins at 9 a.m.

Pledge sponsorships for participants and donations are encouraged. Grad student Swapnil Garge said proceeds will aid youth in local areas and help provide relief for Gulf Coast hurricane victims.

“The money raised from this event will go towards providing youth all over America with techniques and skills needed to manage their emotions, release stress, heighten creativity and support them to be truly successful in every aspect of their lives,” Garge said. “However, the immediate emphasis will be on youth trauma-relief efforts in areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina.”
